Well, Trump can definitely count on Alito and Thomas to vote for DOJ. The question is if three of the four remaining Republican justices are willing to wrap this up in a bow, and make it about Executive Supremacy, or if there going to throw out the non-partisan Civil Service.

Shouldn't the executive be supreme over the executive branch? Trump didn't try to fire a judge or a member of Congress. This ruling means the judges are supreme over the executive branch as well as over themselves. It's inherently anti-democratic and puts a lot of power into the hands of the one branch that is entirely unelected. You are right, the Supreme Court has been signalling for years that sort of thing is inherently unconstitutional. The Constitution is clear that each branch eats its own dogfood and polices its own members. Full stop, end of story.

Constitutionally, the question is more about whether the Legislative branch can make laws that constrain the Executive branch.

Congress can unambiguously set funding levels. Otherwise, the Supreme Court has been very consistent in this (except when they aren't.) The answer is NO, certainly not for firing people the president has no confidence in (unless it is the Federal Reserve!).

They very well may do this, but I don't think the outcome is a positive for our country.
