Airlines were providing lodging?  News to me.  Last late arrival at DFW, I paid for my own room.
If I can afford a $400+ ticket, I can afford to visit The Clown on my own.

Compensating stranded passengers is socialism!  If you don't want that to happen, maybe avoid the budget airlines.

I don't consider a 5 hour delay as stranded.  When I've missed the 'last flight out of Dodge,' I get a room & come back in the morning.

I've seen plenty of shytty behavior at the gate over the years, so I'm sympathetic to the gate agents & the airline.
