That afternoon, she instant-messaged her mother, mentioning she wanted to visit Windows on the World, the restaurant atop the North Tower, where a friend was getting married. At 5:15 p.m., she left her apartment to go shopping. Security cameras caught her at a Century 21 department store two hours later, buying shoes, bedsheets, and lingerie. She was never seen again.

Her husband didn’t report her missing until the next day, assuming she’d stayed the night at a relative’s, as she sometimes did. A private investigator hired by her family found no evidence of an affair or a planned disappearance — but a separate NYPD investigation into her personal struggles left the door open to other explanations, including foul play or a voluntary vanishing act.

In 2004, officials removed her name from the official 9/11 victims list, unable to confirm she was even alive the next morning. Her family spent years fighting the decision in court.

In 2008, a judge reversed the ruling, officially declaring her a September 11 victim — she’s listed on the memorial today. Then, in 2005, an anonymous postcard arrived at a public confession website: “Everyone who knew me before 9/11 believes I’m dead.” No one has ever confirmed who sent it.
