Despite its name, the modern Brazilian wax was actually invented and popularized in Manhattan, New York, rather than Brazil. It was introduced in 1987 by seven Brazilian-born siblings known as the J Sisters (the Padilha sisters) at their New York salon.  The style was inspired by the revealing thong bikinis worn on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where minimal swimwear drove the demand for extensive hair removal.  The New York Launch: When the J Sisters opened their Manhattan salon, they noticed American clients desired a more thorough clean-up to wear smaller bathing suits.  The Name: Because the sisters originated from Brazil and brought the ultra-minimized waxing method to the United States, clients and the media naturally began calling it the "Brazilian" wax.
