I had just got back from the Philippines and was awaiting orders. When I was at USNH Subic Bay, they always told us that if anything went sideways, they would secure the hospital compound with armor and the Marines from Charlie Company down in Cubi Point. So I jump out of my rack, and look for my gear and realize its a friggin 747. 

Nobody told me we were so close to the airport, and I hadn't noticed the noise before.

My only thought was that i was glad i had a single room.

I tried to join the army but they wouldn’t let me because I was fat. I had a 95 on a practice ASVAB I took and I told them they could kick me out if I didn’t lose the weight during basic training. They still wouldn’t take me.  

I suspect that would have altered my life course if I had been allowed in.

Also you must be a little older than me since I wasn’t eligible to join until 1989. 

I think my attempt to join was around 1993.

I enlisted in 1986. When I was in MEPS the guy told me that i could leave in 3 days, or 3 months, before he even finished speaking I said 3 days, yes lets go! Ended up being a good choice because the weather at Great Lakes sucked, and between bootcamp and my A school, I was out of there by mid December.

I flew in from Clark in '69.  We landed at SFO and then hopped on the military blue bus to OAK for the next leg of the trip.  As we were driving through Oakland, someone shouted "look a hippy" everyone crowded to one side of the bus and we saw our first hippie in the wild.
