The Decline Of Civilization Has Now Reached My Garden

**Subject:** The Decline Of Civilization Has Now Reached My Garden

I walked out this morning to inspect the garden — the same garden that certain jealous nobodies on this board have mocked because they could not construct a proper raised planter if Home Depot handed them the lumber, the screws, and a laminated set of instructions — and what do I find?

A potato chip bag.

Not in the street.

Not near the curb.

Not in some liberal urban encampment where trash, crime, and bad decisions are apparently considered “vibrant culture.”

In. My. Garden.

Wedged right up against one of my planters like it had been placed there as some sort of calling card from the collapse of Western civilization.

Now, before the usual suspects start flapping their gums, I am not saying someone deliberately came onto my property and placed it there. I am not saying Spanky parachuted into Boise under cover of darkness with a family-size bag of sour cream and onion and a grudge. Although frankly, with the amount of time that little freak spends obsessing over me, nothing would surprise me.

What I am saying is this: somewhere, some slob consumed his garbage food, discarded the wrapper like a feral animal, and the wind did the rest. That is how societies fall. Not all at once. First it is one potato chip bag. Then it is graffiti. Then it is tents under the overpass. Then it is people stealing catalytic converters and demanding free cell phones.

This is why I have said for YEARS that littering should not be treated like some harmless little “oopsie.” It is not harmless. It is a declaration. It says, “My convenience is more important than your property, your neighborhood, your work, and your standards.”

And yet what happens when these people are caught? A fine? Maybe? A stern talking-to from some city employee in a fleece vest? Please.

There need to be immediate community-based resolutions. I am talking about the kind of consequences that used to exist back when adults were in charge. You get caught throwing trash out of a car window, and you do not get a court date six months later. You get handed gloves, a vest, and a trash bag, and you spend the rest of the day cleaning every gutter, ditch, median, and alley within five miles while decent people drive by and see exactly what kind of person you are.

Public shame used to work. Work used to work. Consequences used to work.

But now? Now we are supposed to have “empathy” for the litterer. Maybe the chip bag had trauma. Maybe the empty soda cup was under-resourced. Maybe the person who threw a fast-food sack into the street was really just expressing himself because society failed to validate his authentic trash journey.

No. Enough.

I did not climb the ladder of life so some mouth-breathing snack criminal could turn my property into the shoulder of I-84. I keep my place up. I maintain my home. I maintain my garden. I know what quality looks like. I know what responsibility looks like. I know what pride of ownership looks like.

And I am telling you, one piece of litter in a private garden is not “just litter.” It is a warning flare.

The cats noticed it immediately, by the way. They have more awareness of property boundaries than half the public. They looked at it, looked at me, and basically said, “Handle this.” So I did. Because that is what adults do.

I removed it. I disposed of it properly. I inspected the planter. No damage. But the point remains.

This country needs to get serious again.

You litter, you clean.

You dump trash, you become the trash detail.

You treat the public like your personal garbage can, and the public gets to watch you correct your mistake in a reflective vest until your arms are sore and your attitude improves.

That is not “cruel.” That is civilization.

And before the basement brigade starts squealing, no, I will not post a photo of the chip bag. I do not need to prove to anonymous failures that litter exists. Go outside and look around. Assuming your mother lets you use the front door.
