Did you know that a Black fourth grader in Mississippi is two and a half times as likely to be proficient in math and reading as one in California?

"Did you know that a Black fourth grader in Mississippi is two and a half times as likely to be proficient in math and reading as one in California?" Maher said. "Mississippi is kicking our a-- in education and for way less money. We’re 37th in fourth-grade reading. They’re ninth."

Maher was citing a Feb. 9, 2026 New York Times article which stated, "For anyone familiar with civil rights history, national testing results are astonishing. A Black Mississippi child is two and a half times as likely to be proficient in reading by fourth grade as a Black California child."

----

"Texas has passed California in solar and blows away California when it comes to wind and energy storage," Maher said. "How does a state with no pro-climate policies produce better climate results than a state where here, even though we have so much better bumper stickers on our Priuses?"

Energy Information Administration data cited by Inside Climate News showed Texas produced 58,634 gigawatt-hours from utility-scale solar in 2025, compared with California’s 53,713 gigawatt-hours. The outlet reported Texas passed California in installed utility-scale solar capacity in 2024

These Three Red States Are the Best Hope in Schooling - Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi

Louisiana ranks No. 1 in the country in recovery from pandemic losses in reading, while Alabama ranks No. 1 in math recovery.

The state with the lowest chronic absenteeism in schools is Alabama, according to a tracker with data from 40 states.

Once an educational laughingstock, Mississippi now ranks ninth in the country in fourth-grade reading levels — and after adjusting for demographics such as poverty and race, Mississippi ranks No. 1, while Louisiana ranks No. 2, according to calculations by the Urban Institute. Using the same demographic adjustment, Mississippi also ranks No. 1 in America in both fourth-grade and eighth-grade math.

Black fourth graders in Mississippi are on average better readers than those in Massachusetts, which is often thought to have the best public school system in the country (and one that spends twice as much per pupil).

The SLS core stages are built in Louisiana.  If you consider Texas part of the South, then there's that whole SpaceX thingy going on.

Mississippi's educational test scores (as shown in the national report card) have been increasing, California with a shyt ton more people scores average.

Massachusetts has the highest scores, in terms of 4th grade proficiency. Even then, across all demographics, the proficiency rate is about 40%.

One thing I'll note about Mississippi is that they passed a law that holds more kids in third grade if they have academic difficulty, whereas California is likely to promote those students.

Ahem:  California is a SAT state.  Only the top 3% of their students take the ACT.

I am surprised u didn’t just blame Biden for this because that is equally nonsensical.

Guess u never heard of “sampling” as a statistical technique to measure something.

Why would they "sample" their own data when they can simply sum and divide the totals.
