The SLS core stages are built in Louisiana. If you consider Texas part of the South, then there's that whole SpaceX thingy going on.

Mississippi's educational test scores (as shown in the national report card) have been increasing, California with a shyt ton more people scores average.

Massachusetts has the highest scores, in terms of 4th grade proficiency. Even then, across all demographics, the proficiency rate is about 40%.

One thing I'll note about Mississippi is that they passed a law that holds more kids in third grade if they have academic difficulty, whereas California is likely to promote those students.
