In a packed sports arena here, Vice President JD Vance held his phone up to the microphone so that the thousands of Hungarians gathered in support of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Tuesday could hear the voice on the other end of the line.

“I’m a big fan of Viktor, I’m with him all the way. The United States is with him all the way,” President Trump said as the crowd cheered.

Vance visited Hungary this week as the prime minister is facing a tough re-election fight. The vote is on Sunday, and Orbán has been trailing in the polls for months.

The vice president’s display of support for Orbán is a clear indication of the importance the Trump administration places on supporting political leaders and parties that it sees as aligned with its conservative policies.
