This is a prototype. It is to hold two thick oven mitts.

So prototype is done. The slicer suggested printing it like I did. But I don't like the results. The supports added too many nubbies. I'll print it again with the base on the bottom. From a design perspective, the protrusion can be shorter. I sort of suspected that, but I wanted to get the mitts on the hook, let them hang naturally and then see how much room the little eyelets on the mitts took up. I have that measurement now. And the "stopper" on the end I think would be better as a cone or a sphere. Its diameter is correct, though. As it the diameter of the protrusion. Finally, I might see if I like how it looks with the protrusion at an angle. I'll post an updated model soon!

I am always learning.
I am an advanced user of Sketchup since I have used that for 20 years, but I am definitely a novice when it comes to Fusion. Fusion lends itself to 3D printing better than Sketchup for anything beyond primitive shapes.
So, Sketchup and Fusion are 3D modeling tools.
In terms of 3D printing, it is much more WYSIWYG than in the past which is why I waited so long. I didn't want to be fuqing around with a printer all the time. So that part of it (the tinkering) is something I am a novice at and don't have much interest in advancing my knowledge there.
The second component of 3D printing is the slicer software. This is what takes the output of a 3D modeling tool and turns it into G-code that the printer understands. I use Bambu Studio, which is the slicer from my hardware vendor. I am a novice with it as well but am growing my skills. It is mostly plug and play but sometimes it does weird things, and I am still learning when to obey the slicer or override it.
The real skill is designing models in a way that they can be printed properly. This involves thinking about orientation, mechanical forces, layer lines, seams, supports, etc. Often there are tradeoffs that must be made. When you think about the tradeoffs then you often need to think about changing your model to optimize for the printing realities.
An example with the current model. From a strength perspective it would be better to print the hook horizontally instead of vertically. This has to do with the layer line orientation. Prints are weakest across layer lines. When printed vertically the layers will be horizontal. But when you actually install the hook horizontally, you will have a shear force that is going across the layer lines. That's not ideal. If you print it horizontally, however, you'll get better strength after install because the shear force will be perpendicular to the layer lines. This is ideal. The downside is that on a curved surface with horizonal layers, you will get really pronounced layer lines. So, you are trading aesthetics for strength. Since I need decent aesthetics here, I print vertically and deal with the strength issue by making the post thicker than it would need to be otherwise.
And, we haven't even talked about one critical aspect of all of this: printer filament material. Different materials have different mechanical properties, different printing properties, and different aesthetic properties. I could print this in PETG to get better layer adhesion to offset the shear force, but PLA is easier to print, looks nicer, and is available in many more colors.
So, yes, I am learning a new skill.

Okay, so this is still not quite right. The dimensions are all good. But I've got the layer lines on top due to the angle. So that will be a fix to the model. Basically, I need an opposite angle on that face to offset the angle of the protrusion. I am confident enough in making that change that my next print won't need to be a prototype. It will be the final print in the final color.
