What about eggs?

The biggest issue is that there has been so much bullshyt spewed about the US being "energy independent" that the details just got ignored.  The stuff that's coming from fracked wells is extremely light (I.E. low carbon number) and you are limited in how much you can blend into refinery feedstock, with that upper limit being lower if you want to make heavier products like diesel or Jet-A1.

Normally, this is handled by exporting a bunch of the super-light stuff and importing a bunch of heavy or intermediate crude then blending them together - this is a win for everyone because blending the input API down means you don't need to use so much cracking capacity and hence get better throughput, but it also means that if you can't get the heavier crude to blend in you are effectively fuqed because although it's possible in principle to upgrade short-chain alkenes to longer chain ones refineries are not setup to do so simply because most of the time the desired products (like mogas) are considerably shorter than the chains is the feedstock and hence cracking is what you need (and what refiners are setup to do).

So you can have a fuqton of very expensive tight oil - but still not be able to make useful products from it at any rate that makes sense. On the other side, lacking the very light feedstock hurts throughout (since you become constrained by cracking capacity) - but you can still in the end make anything you like.

This is the fatal flaw in the EIAs "crude oil and other petroleum liquids" classification - they aren't completely fungible and hence really shouldn't be netted together like that.
