Surprise, durprise - fat pills dont work.

Researchers at the University of Oxford analyzed 37 studies and found that people who stopped taking anti-obesity medications experienced “rapid weight regain and reversal of beneficial effects,” returning to their pre-treatment size in under two years. The report concludes that without lifestyle changes aided by medical, nutrition and other professionals, even the best weight loss drugs end up being expensive ways to change nothing at all.

Wegovy works – at first. That won't end our obesity problem.

They work better than lifestyle changes.

Absolutely they do.

Most people stick with "lifestyle changes" for about a month. People are far more likely to beat a heroin addiction than maintain long-term, meaningful weight loss.

The new GLP-1 agonists have much, much, much higher adherence.

Neither works once you stop. So, the better one is the one whose adherence is superior.

Are they working for you?

Of course.  Without lifestyle changes you are going to gain the weight back eventually.  In fact probably even more weight than you had before.

GLP-1s are forever, on a maintenance dose. The price should be low and available to everyone. It benefits so much more than weight loss. The weight loss leads to multiple other health benefits. Diabetes 2 and high blood pressure will be history. Statins for high cholesterol, gone. Aches and pains and mystery inflammation gone.

Yes to the extent that they have helped me maintain my weight for several years. They have not helped me lose much. But that is something that has been observed with the current approved drugs / dosages. Their efficacy seems to lessen as weight increases. Bigger doses and different formulations are in the works. I look forward to that.

GLP-1s are poison, that paralyze your stomach, and have serious long-term side effects.

They're literally Gila Monster venom.

This is just a big money grab by big pharma, and will result in massive health problems for millions.

You seem to be missing the point - this is exactly the same "they are harmless and everyone should be on them" crap that the pharma industry were saying about statins, at least until it became clear there were a whole bunch of adverse effects from them. But those adverse effects took some time to be identified and as a result the health of a lot of people was damaged.

We also had the stuff with the COX-2 inhibitors - touted as being way safer than the nonspecific NSAIDs but ultimately discovered to significantly increase heart attack risks.

Sure, it's possible that GLP-1 agonists really are completely benign - but the rather checkered history of the actual health implications of these heavily touted "wonder drugs" suggests that caution is advised.

GLP-1s have been on the market for two decades. They are safe and effective.

All drugs have side effects. Every year people die from a bad reaction to aspirin.

I lost 5-7 BMI points to get to my current weight.  That isn't that substantial, really, but I did it with a combination of exercise and diet, and have maintained that - mostly.  It is hard.  I was diarying every meal and snack, logging my daily weight, and logging all my exercise.  My exercise schedule is pretty extensive - at my peak I was doing ten or more workouts a week, a combination of weights, cardio, yoga and other activities, with 3 or more of those sessions being instructor led.  After 18 months, it all got a little tiring, and I was feeling some burnout.  I stopped all the diarying, kept most of the exercise, and tried to stick with what I had learned about eating, and I ended up gaining weight during the fall and the holidays - which were always tough times of year for me.  It was only 1-2 BMI points, and my weight has already  dropped a little since Christmas.

So, I agree with Spanky that lifestyle changes are damn hard, and I've had better long term results than many.

One of the recent things I read suggested diet is the most important determinant of weight, and I agree that I found I couldn't exercise enough for substantial weight loss, and that's despite a focus on substantial cardio sessions early on.  450-650 calorie workouts, five days a week, isn't enough to lose even a pound of weight in a week.  But, the exercise has done a lot to improve my overall health, and make me feel better.

I've only been taking Mounjaro for 4 days and I already feel like a new man. It's a miracle drug as far as I am concerned.

Other doctors have been telling me so for the last couple years but I took my time to try it. Wish I had started sooner.
