EMPORIA, Kan. (KAKE) — A missing Emporia teacher has been found dead after being reported missing since Friday night, officials say.

In a release on Sunday afternoon, the Emporia Police Department said, with the assistance of K9 Daisy and her team from Search & Rescue of Kansas, has recovered a deceased woman approximately 300 yards from the area where Rebecca Rauber was last seen on video.

Police say during the investigation on Sunday, an additional video showed Rauber in the 700 block of W. 4th Ave. at approximately 11:44 p.m on January 23rd.  Rebecca was found approximately 300 yards south of West 4th Avenue, where she was last seen on video. Rauber was located in a wooded area.

At this time, EPD says it appears Rauber may have succumbed to hypothermia early on in her disappearance, as she was covered in snow due to the snowstorm that became heavy on Saturday, January 24.

Next of Kin has been notified, police said.

"We want to thank our community for the outpouring of care and assistance during this situation," EPD said in a news release. "We also want to thank KHP, Lyon County Sheriff’s office, Search and Rescue of Kansas and the Lyon County Communications Center for their efforts in trying to locate Rebecca.  All of the agencies listed poured many hours of manpower, involving many resources in the hope of positive outcome. Our hearts and prayers are truly with the Rauber family. "

EPD detectives are currently processing the scene and our investigation is still continuing.

Previous story:

EMPORIA, Kan. (KAKE) — A search is ongoing for an Emporia teacher who disappeared late Friday night.

The Emporia Police Department says 28-year-old Rebecca Rauber, a second-grade teacher, was last seen at approximately 11:37 p.m. on Friday, January 23.

EPD says a missing person report made at 1:13 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, indicated that Rauber had left the Town Royal bar, located in the 400 block of Commercial Street, on foot without her purse, phone, or jacket.

Rauber has been reported as possibly wearing a Wichita State University sweatshirt and/or a flannel shirt.  She is 28 years old, approx. 5’8” tall and 160lbs.  She has long brown hair with blonde highlights and brown eyes.

Officers began searching for Rauber immediately and utilized business surveillance cameras in the area, EPD said.

According to police, Rauber was observed walking alone westbound on West 5th Avenue. The department says video footage from a residence shows Rebecca walking north on Neosho Street from West 5th Avenue at approximately 11:37 p.m. on Friday, January 23.

Several additional videos from the intersection of 6th Avenue and Neosho Street were reviewed, police said; however, Rauber did not appear to cross 6th Avenue at that location.

The department says a search dog was used Saturday night without success and “every available resource” is being used to find her, including assistance from other agencies.

Police say community members within a three to four block radius of 5th Avenue and Neosho Street can assist in the search by reviewing home surveillance or security camera footage between the hours of 11:30 p.m. on Friday, January 22, and the early morning hours thereafter.

Anyone with information regarding Rauber’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Emporia Police Department immediately at 620-343-4225. Information may also be provided anonymously through Lyon County Crime Stoppers at 620-342-2273 or online through P3 Tips.

Another reason why you don't let the spanky unit outside in Bartlett Bogs until at least MAY.   One wrong move and the volunteer rescuers go looking for him, and finding a spanky in ANY condition would be heartbreaking.   Think of the volunteers!
