I bought a used NS Design electric from my neighbor, she gave me a great deal at $350. They retail around a grand.

The really cheap starter violins require a lot of work, so it's best to start up the food chain a bit if you are committed. The scales are the same for the violin and mandolin, so I already have some knowledge, getting used to the bow will probably take some time...
