Re: Atlas is shrugging - Valero is taking a $1 billion dollar loss just to get out of California by April 2026

Two major refineries in California are closing in 2026, representing 18% of production in California. Gasoline, diesel and jet fuel are about to get a lot more expensive there.

Why are they closing? Environment regulations, California fines, litigation warfare expenses … they cannot modernize the refineries and cannot remain profitable.

But at the same time, California lacks the pipeline capacity or ocean import terminal capacity to replace 18% of their supply.

So what happens? The highest fuel prices in the USA are about to become even more expensive.

And Gavin Newsom wants to bring his policies in California to the rest of the USA in the next presidential election.

Gavin Newsom is working tirelessly to turn California into YEMEN.  Look it up and tell me how wrong I am, and why.

So if a oil company spews shyt into the air, the government should just let it keep doing that forever because we cannot even think about higher prices for anything because that's COMMUNISM or SOCIALISM or BAGGERJISM or something like that?

Yemen is better run.

Best thing for Valero to do is hand Newsome the keys to main gate of the refinery.  Let Newsome & the legislature run it.

California regulations allow the state to shake down the refineries for cash.  Now, California can fine itself for violations.

California can lead by example.

You can bet if California is stupid enough to run the refineries, they'll be spewing plenty of pollution into the air.

Always mildly amusing (but not really) when the modfilth obsession with controlling board content mutilates a libfilth assholes post and makes it even more idiotic than it already was. lol

This could be entertaining.  If diesel prices shoot skyward, competent commercial trucking operators will decline loads heading for California.

Tom,

Hasn't it been a requirement for California gas & diesel to be refined in California?

Would the bolsheviks in Sacramento pass legislation to force Valero to run the refinery?

HEADING for California?   How about LEAVING California?   All those tens of thousands of containers coming off of ships have to go somewhere.  How about those trucks no longer going TO California?  How about all those tractors that can't even enter the pristine state of California?

Don't forget about those trains.   Those locomotives all work on diesel, you know, and those containers have to get to the rail yards by TRUCK.

The 7th largest economy, MY ASS.

No, but it has  to be a specific formula, cooked up by a bunch of earth saving politicians.

I thought the air resources board had forced shipyard diesel trucks to low emission cabs?

Shyt like this is why a company like Valero would rather write off a billion bucks and walk away rather than take more abuse from a corrupt and disfunctional government.   I am not sure if CA can ever fix the mess they are making of their state.

They had warm houses.  California allowed them to burn.
