From being one of the most used operating systems to becoming a universally ridiculed, Windows has been negatively transformed by Microsoft’s own decisions.

SamplesBoiFuqing thing rebooted on me again yesterday with no warning. I want to punch someone at Microsoft over that crap. It's as if they think nobody ever has any long running processes running on Windows because its a toy operating system.

Operator error.
My computer reboots when I tell it to do so. Never at another time.

It seems very hard to get recent versions of Windows to respect this. Current versions of Windows can't even reliably remember user's folder preferences. Can you point me to a reliable solution?

Do you understand group policy?
That’s how I enforce it.
I can send you the policy settings.

I use Windows Pro but I don't have a server or have a domain set up. Is that going to work?
And, no, I don't really understand group policy. I have IT nerds for that. They maintain the network. I maintain the databases and custom software.

It will work on a standalone Windows 11 Pro machine.
gpedit.msc from the Run dialog or search Start Menu for local group policy. Computer configuration. Administrative templates. Windows components. Windows Update. A bunch of settings there. I can look at mine tomorrow.
This is local group policy. Not local security policy.

Have you seasoned it correctly?

SamplesBoiReady for your suggestions.

Samples_BoiThe problem with Windows is if you are part of a domain at a company there are administrators who have control of your machine.
It is quite difficult to get a proper list of all the policies that apply to you because they apply in a heirarchy.
Probably one of the IT nerds who controls your domain has set a group policy that is overriding anything you are setting yourself.
Spanky controls everything about his machines/Domain which is why he is so confident.

.,Windows 11 was the official switch over from being an OS to being a marketing/store front

It is my home machine that is bothering me. I was trying to say that I don't understand as much about networking as I should because I have IT nerds at work that have shielded me, where it matters most. They definitely understand. However, my work computer rebooted as well. I'd like to get beyond that on my desktop machine.

Is this the one you recently assembled?
I put both of my laptops on 11 awhile back. No issues there. Recently was forced to do it to my work laptop (company wide, they waited until the last minute) and it's actually been much more stable than 10 ever was for me. I use that one pretty much constantly.
When it wants to do a restart, it at least tells me that I have a day or two to get my shyt together if I can't do it right away.

Did you look in Event Viewer to see if you can tell which process ordered the reboot? It might give you a clue.
But, if you have full control then follow Spanky's advice and just disallow a reboot as a policy.

Spanky, have you thought about becoming a Windows Admin or Engineer for a job? You sound like you know a little about these things?

Yes this is the new computer from this year (i7-14700, 5060Ti 16GB, 128GB, 8TB) but it has been irritating me for years.
It usually tells me it is going to reboot also. Not the last time. Maybe Microsoft moved it up because something worried them.

It is 100% possible to get every policy applied to you and your machine including the hierarchy and local overrides.
This is called Resultant Set of Policies (RSOP). It is a fundamental tool for troubleshooting group policy.

Can you confirm the reboots you are talking about are update related? That was how I understood the original problem.

You aren’t responding to me but that was how I started my career.

I kept my XP up for 90-120 days at a time. My NT server regularly logged 400 days before Id shut down due to leaky file handles. Now 7 days is miraculous.

Any comment on this Spanky? It seems like people are having lots of issues, even when setting policies.
