Phil, how come China is retaliating against US tariffs? Doesn't China know that even with punative US tariffs they'd still be better off not retaliating?

Why doesn't China understand simple economics?

Because it gave them a good justification for doing things they wanted to do anyway, but which would have been as excessively provocative if they had done it outside of the context of a reaction to measures initiated by the US. Things like shytlisting a whole bunch of US military contractors and hence restricting their ability to get certain critical raw materials that China provides almost the entire world supply of. And it also makes some imported stuff more expensive to encourage the substitution of imports with domestically sourced product, which is one of their long-term objectives.

Another thing that should be borne in mind is that the Chinese are not at all prone to snap reactions - but their response to the last bunch of Trump tariffs was both immediate and quite complex, which strongly suggests it was part of a pre-planned contingency response that had already been decided on so that as soon as the trigger conditions were met they knew exactly how they were going to respond.

And they ain't backing down. Like a shark they smell blood and Trump is desperate to find a way out of this mess he got himself into

Believe it or not the Chinese are gonna emerge stronger as a result of this

Certainly the World is behind the Chinese.  That's why nobody has cut any deals with the US waiting for their response

And Trump will emerge as the loser he has always been

shudder

So China is a merchantilist? Free trade benefits everybody.
