They don't have to know anything about sex. But they will know that some kids have a mother and a father, and some have same sex parents.

My kids know some people have one parent, some people have 2 moms, 2 dads and its fine.  I also tell my kids some dudes like other dudes and its ok but they leave it at that.  When you are a parent it is obvious what is age appropriate
