Cistercian Numerals

13th-century monk number system — one glyph encodes 0 to 9,999

Cistercian monks invented this number system in the 13th century. A single vertical staff carries four quadrants — each encoding one digit from 0–9. Together, one symbol can represent any number from 0 to 9,999.
